I've had lots of struggles upon accepting that I am not meant to hold guns rather I am meant for the kids... There were mornings getting up is the hardest thing to accomplish... to face another day, or should I say to change another day, not for myself, but for others...

Being a teacher has taught me the meaning of unconditional love and giving your full trust, even there seems to be no hope at all... You will lose so much, but at the end of each day, everything will be worth it... Even in small things you give, you just don't know, it could mean so much...

SLAC 2011: LEARNING TO READ THROUGH PHONICS

To strengthen the competencies of the teachers in using phonics, a School Learning Action Cell entitled Learning to Read through Phonics was facilitated dated February 18, 2011. This is to give importance on how and where to start in teaching a child to read.
ABOUT CHINOPS
Have you heard/read the word CHINOPS? Can you tell me what is it about? think!... think!... think!...

Okay, CHINOPS are jumbled letters of the word PHONICS. Now my question is, what is PHONICS? yes, letter sounds.
Last February, we facilitated a School Learning Action Cell which aims to give the importance of knowing how and where to start in teaching a child to read.
First step will be familiarizing the learners to the sounds around them like the sounds of the animals, objects and transportation. This can be done through songs with actions or showing of pictures.
Follow introducing the sound of letters one by one. Start with the vowels. Emphasize that the pupils must learn how is their mouth open on each letter. Then the consonants. Along with this process, use different objects. And try to put melodies in exercises so the pupils can easily remember each letter sound.
After learning the sounds of letters, we can now go on teaching them reading syllables also through sounds. In Filipino, we can use the technique of Claveria. Then, words with CVC pattern, words with blends, words with digraphs and words with long vowel sounds.
Why do the pupils need to know first the letter sounds? We must always remember that LEARNING TAKES TIME. But the question is, HOW LONG? In phonics, it is not too long because this is the most effective way for them to read in a short span of time and we could avoid rote readers. All that we need to do to be able to achieve a quick result is of course invest EFFORT, both, the LEARNERS and the TEACHERS.
